MAKE UP

Morning came
Yesterday’s make up smudged
Like unwanted memories
Stained on my skin
I scrub my face
Yesterday's mascara clings on.

Bitter memories
Like remnants of the mascara
Heavy on my eyelashes
Circling my eyes
My eyes sting, I am sore
The mascara still clings on.

My eyelashes are mated
Refusing to part
Tears drip down
With memories of what I thought perfect
A glowing face
Lips turned into a permanent smile

It was what I dreamt of
The clinking of champagne glasses
The swishing of whiskey
The toasting to life, the euphoria
Meeting new people
The men, oh, the men.

I fell in love
Today, I’m out of it
Perfection desecrated
Beauty marred
I want it all gone
I want to apply a fresh new coat.
